Another demolition job by KO king Amir

YOU either find Amir Abubaker’s controversial and confident comments entertaining, even admirable, or want the fighter to button it.

There is no middle ground. The Kurdish KO artist is boxing Marmite – you love or loathe his style.

What cannot be denied is the Coventry light-middle carries ferocious power.

On GBM’s major Saturday show at the Skydome, Abubaker demolished usually durable Serge Ambomo in the opening bout of a long night.

One mighty right uppercut sent the squat, muscled Cameroon boxer to sleep at two minutes 24 seconds of the third of a scheduled four rounder.

That’s quite a statement from Amir (11st 11lbs 8oz), now unbeaten in six. Ambomo (11st 8lbs 30z) may have won only 13 of 79 contests (three draws), but he’s pulled off his share of upsets and can usually be relied on to go the distance.

Abubaker, who runs barbers shops in his home city, showed he’s a dangerous fellow.

After the performance, manager Anthony Manning began beating the drum for a fight between Abubaker and Midlands champ Ashlee Eales who lost his unbeaten record on the bill.

“Coventry v Coventry – it’s a great fight for the city,” he said. “It makes sense.”

Of 24-year-old Abubaker’s demolition job, he said: “With every fight, Amir shows the power is for real. With every fight, he matures more.”

Abubaker, not a man lacking in confidence, told me: “I opened the show tonight, I want to headline the next one. I’ve shown I deserve it.”

In the past, the 24-year-old has bemoaned the lack of support he gets from Coventry fight fans. The frustration is understandable.

If you’re looking for raw, lights out excitement, Amir is your man. He doesn’t do dull fights.

“Maybe God had to take something away,” he said. “He gave me so many skills that he had to take something away and that was selling tickets.

“I know that if I can’t do it (sell tickets), nobody can.”

He added: “Boxing is costing me money. If it wasn’t for boxing, I’d have a big, new Rolex on my wrist.

“I’m hungry for titles, but I’m more hungry for money.”
