Board want a Powar - Owen title contest, but it won’t happen

THE mouth-watering Midlands super-featherweight title clash between Macauley Owen and Gully Powar will not take place.

That’s despite the Boxing Board of Control’s Midlands council calling for the unbeaten prospects to meet for the vacant belt.

Richie Carter, who trains Powar, has confirmed it is not an opportunity the Wolverhampton boxer will be taking up.

I’m not surprised and can see the logic in the decision made by those guiding Gully, who has crammed 11 bouts into his first 18 months as a pro.

First and foremost, 21-year-old Powar is a natural featherweight who could probably make super-bantam for title fights.

Also, a match with Owen, Telford’s former outstanding amateur who is 8-0 as a pro, is a potential big stage, big money battle down the line.

Such a quality match-up merits a bigger title, a major setting – and that can happen in the future.

Of the championship fight with Owen, Carter said: “It’s not been discussed. Gully is a feather, he’s only been boxing these heavier lads because he can’t get opponents at feather.

“He and Macauley are two talented lads destined for big stages.

“I think they (BCB Promotions) are looking for an English title or British title eliminator for Gully.”

Carter has high hopes for his boxer, who is a bundle of fighting fury in the ring. Powar simply never stops throwing punches.

“I think Gully can go all the way,” he said. “In 18 months’ time, when his man-strength has kicked in, he’ll be a nightmare for anyone.

“It’s hard to land on him and his workrate is phenomenal – and he can keep that workrate up for 10 rounds. He has an engine that keeps going.

“That’s when the knockouts will come, over the longer distances. Eight, 10 and 12 rounds, they won’t be able to keep up with him.”

Carter added: “He’s a throwback.”
