MYKEY Lee Broughton had things pretty much all his own way against Christian Narvaez at the Eastside Rooms, Birmingham, last night (Saturday).

The lightweight landed sharp rights, threw in some showboating and ended the six rounder with a flourish to take referee Peter McCormack’s landslide 60-54 decision.

In the main event on Anthony Manning’s show, all Narvaez – head and shoulders shorter than the skilled Birmingham prospect – had to offer was toughness. He possesses bags of that.

The squat Nicaraguan has only twice failed to hear the final bell in 105 outings.

He took some blistering shots from Broughton and the poker face mask only slipped once. Narvaez’ dropped his hands and scowled after being caught clean.

For Mykey Lee – a Midlands title defeat the sole blemish in 11 contests – it was very much a mark-time affair while championship opportunities are explored.

As a boxer, the 23-year-old is very easy on the eye, with fast hands and fine footwork. He worked over Narvaez (10st 2lbs 6oz) with rights to head and body in the first, drove home right hooks to the ribs in the second and by the fourth was dancing, hands down, around the ring behind a flashy jab. In that session, Broughton connected with a lightning fast four punch combination.

To his credit, Narvaez did try to fight back, but lacked the speed and savvy to upset the home favourite. He connected with a right uppercut in the third – a very isolated success in a bout dominated by Broughton (9st 13lbs 12oz).

Mykey Lee really let the heavy punches go in the last and one spiteful right had Narvaez lurching back. Like so many before, he couldn’t find the combinations to close the show.

“He’s one very tough cookie,” Broughton said of Narvaez at the end.

He certainly is.
