Matty books place in final with a stoppage

Matty Williams…heavy being dubbed a special talent

MATTY Williams – the heavyweight everyone in the Birmingham game is talking about – has booked his place in the national final of the NABGC championships.

In Blackburn at the weekend, the 20-year former council grass cutter mowed down Charlie Henry Bate in two rounds.

After a competitive first round, Williams upped the tempo in the second. Bate (Jab And Hook ABC, Warrington) was given two standing counts and stopped in the session.

Already the reigning champ, the Acocks Green ABC boxer will defend his crown in Witham, Essex, on Thursday.

Matty – 6ft 4ins tall and 17 stone – is carving a real name for himself in the amateur ranks. He’s beaten very, very good fighters, including current elite super-heavyweight champ Derrick Osadolor and Leamington top talent Big Joe Bourne.

He’s now lost only seven of 31 and has received invaluable support and help from top trainer Max McCracken.

“He’s a special talent,” Max told me. “His work rate and punch volume are phenomenal.

“And he’s still growing, still filling out.”

“My dreams are to fight at the Blues ground and become a world champion,” Matty, die-hard Birmingham City fan, said. “My strengths are my engine and the volume of punches I throw. I like to put the pressure on.”
