Powar - new star has same work ethic as former ring legends!

GULLY Powar, one of Britain's most active prospects, has been testing himself against a wide range of opponents, writes PAUL WEBB.

And just two years after turning professional, he will box for the 12th time on BCB Promotions “Backlash” show at the Hangar, Wolverhampton, on December 6.

 The 22-year-old super-featherweight made a successful step up to eight rounds last time out, headlining at the Hangar with a shutout points win over Eliecer Quezada. The Nicaraguan was his sixth foreign opponent in a row and Powar, from Wolverhampton,  explains he likes the challenge that the international fighters bring.

 "It's simple - I love boxing and love fighting,” he said. “It was the same when I was an amateur, I never wanted to be out of the ring for a long period of time. Being this active means I can constantly improve and learn. It's also pushing me up the rankings and I am very ambitious - I want to get to the next level. I love feeling the thrill of being in a fight, which keeps me completely focused.

 "These guys have a bit of flare about them. They definitely come to fight and at some stage I will be boxing international opponents at title level, so it makes sense to get that experience while I am still learning.

“Quezada had a bit of power and he was very tough. I hurt my hand on his head and thought I might get him out of there in the sixth, but he's got a good record and has boxed a lot heavier than me in his career.”

 Powar has built up a large online following, but he is no social media boxer. He is keen to stress that at his age he isn't looking to rush in. Powar and coach Richie Carter from Wolverhampton Boxing Club have a long-term plan.

 “I don't mind who my next opponent is - he could be southpaw, het could be orthodox, he could be taller or shorter,” he said. “I want to test myself and what we have worked on in the gym. I have a lot more to show and Richie calls me his dark horse as we are waiting patiently and will surprise a lot of people when the time comes to step up.

“I'm grateful for all the support I have online and what we are building. I haven't lost a single round in a fight yet, and I expect the same on the 6th.”
