Robinson looking to end career on a high

BATTLE scarred veteran Andrew Robinson will begin drawing the curtain down on his stellar career when he boxes for the 40th time on June 15 at the Eastside Rooms, Birmingham, writes PAUL WEBB.
It is his very last fight on a home show.
The 39-year-old has boxed for the English, British, and WBC International titles, spending most of his high-level career in the away corner on big shows throughout the UK and Europe.
“This will be my final time boxing in Birmingham,” said Robinson.” It will be almost 12 years since I made my professional debut against Bobby Wood at the Civic Hall in Wolverhampton. It will be a special occasion for me, and I’m excited to get out there one last time.
It has been a long career, with some highs and lows, and while this won’t be the final time “D’Animal” steps through the ropes, the super-middleweight is reflecting on the journey he has taken in the game.
He said: “I have given boxing everything I possibly have to give. There has been a lot of sacrifice, time away from family, missing important things, and now it is time to give back to those who have supported me and prioritise the people closest to me.”
Robinson last saw action back in March when he travelled to Poland to take on the unbeaten Karol Welter. It was his fourth trip to Eastern Europe after a superb trilogy of fights with Damian Jonak.
He said: “It was another opportunity that I couldn’t say no to, and going the full 10 rounds, being part of a big event once again, was brilliant.
“When you are the away fighter, you know you are unlikely to get any favours from the judges and I knew I’d probably need to knock Welter out. But, overall, it was another good experience for me.
“I want one more after this, a 10 or 12 rounder at a good level, and then that will be it for me. It has been an emotional training camp, but at the back of my mind there is that excitement that I know I will be able to take a break.
“I definitely think I will stay in the sport at some level, passing my knowledge and experience on to the next generation.
“It wouldn’t be possible to pick out one moment from my career - all of it has been one long highlight for me. The real highlights are the people I have met and the places I have been. I get sad thinking about the end, but I promise to give one big last performance and finish on a high.”
The event at the Eastside Rooms is also set to feature former British title challenger Ijaz Ahmed, Cori Gibbs and unbeaten trio Hamza Azeem, Ryan Woolridge and James Griffiths.
