Seedhouse shines in dominant points win

I CAN see, after watching Callum Seedhouse notch-up his second pro win, why the teenager has generated a buzz in the trade.

Witnessing him outpoint rugged Eliecer Quezada on Friday, I can see why trainer Richard Carter announced: “Callum can achieve what he wants to achieve.”

Great Wyrley’s former amateur star is lightning fast, unorthodox – constantly switching stances -and evidently has sting in his shots. The way he selected them on BCB’s show at the Hangar, Wolverhampton, impressed this writer: Seedhouse, a butcher by day, appears to have a high ring IQ.

Nicaragua’s Quezada is a rugged individual with close to 70 bouts under his belt. Not many drop him, yet Seedhouse sent him down in the fourth and final round with a left hook.

It landed too late for a sustained follow-up attack and Callum had to settle for a four round, 40-35 decision from referee Chris Dean.

“I was looking to open him up for a left hook and it worked,” the 19-year-old said. “I’m still learning as we go along, there’s no rush.”

With Andy Owen in his corner, Seedhouse (9st 10lbs) switch-hit from all angles, his arms working like pistons.

Quezada (9st 9lbs) tried to keep his tormentor at bay with jabs but lacked the speed to land anything significant.

Just as it seemed he’d survived the storm, Seedhouse landed a spiteful right, then sent Quezada down with that left hook. With only seconds left, the visitor was on his feet at five to hear the final bell.

It’s too early to predict what Seedhouse can achieve, although he has no doubt ring glory beckons. Watching him try will, I’m sure, be exciting.
