Skiddy looks to end a great year in style

IT’S been a perfect first year in the paid ranks for Danny Skidmore, writes PAUL WEBB.

And he is looking to end 2024 unbeaten on BCB Promotions’ Backlash show at the Hangar, Wolverhampton, on December 6.

After a very active start that saw the Tipton 28-year-old box three times in just four months, a rib injury and show delay slightly slowed the momentum.

"I was meant to be boxing in October,” said Skidmore, “but I picked up an injury that took a bit of time to heal up. Despite that, I never stopped training and being in the gym, I just couldn't spar. It has been a longer gap than I had between my first three fights, but it's great to be back on at a venue so close to home, and I'm looking forward to it.”

A successful debut against Paul Scaife in February was followed with a shutout points win over the experienced but defensive-minded Simas Volosinas in April. Stefan Vincent was up next in June and it was an impressive performance from “Skiddy” who won every round.

Skidmore said: "Stefan is a tricky boxer and it was a good learning fight for me. I looked at his next couple after myself and he has gone rounds with some good opposition. I think it was probably my best performance out of the three so far. He didn't give me much to aim at, but I targeted the body well and was happy with the win.”

Skidmore trains at Gymmies Fitness and Boxing, in Tipton, under gym owner and coach Jimmy Gould. It's a no-nonsense environment and the close-knit group put in plenty of work and leave no stone unturned.

Skidmore added: "Being with Jimmy is great. It's a small group, which is a good thing, but also it's hard and the training can be brutal at times as he always has his eyes on you. There are no easy sessions and you see the results of that work on fight night. I spar a lot of rounds with Conor Baker and we are both at a similar stage, ending our first year as pros. I'm still working full time, so I don't have the luxury of travelling for sparring in the day.

"We have talked about next year and I know this will probably be my last fight over four rounds. Sometimes in sparring it can take me a round or two to get warmed up, so I know the longer the fight distance, the better it will suit my style. By this time next year maybe we are looking at possible title opportunities. Until then, it's about making it 4-0 and ending this year with a win.
