Time approaching to give Singh a real test

FORMER Coventry amateur star Callum Singh is a very, very well schooled boxer.

Tall and relaxed, he places punches with poise and precision. He glides around the ring. The 22-year-old is very easy on the eye.

At Sports Connexion last night, 22-year-old Singh went over old ground and excelled in a 40-36, four round shutout over Jake Pollard.

He beat the Bradford journeyman by the same margin and over the same distance in his debut. A year-and-a-half on, Callum, now unbeaten in six, looked much, more impressive in the return.

Callum worked the body expertly and the rights downstairs were particularly impressive.

The young man has the tools to go far, yet has still to grab the public’s attention. And that’s partly down to the unanswered questions surrounding his career.

What is his best weight? Some have told me super-fly, which seems ambitious. Long and lean, Singh, who weighed 8st 13lbs 6oz last night, looked every inch a super-bantam. Maybe he can squeeze down to bantam, but there didn’t appear a lot to spare.

Has he power? Callum has romped his pro tests, but is yet to register a stoppage. Survivors like Jake Pollard, who has had over 70 bouts, are hard to budge over four rounds.

We’ll know more after Singh when he faces ambitious opponents over longer distances.

The man, himself, is reticent about beating his own drum. A handful of interviews have shown me he is thoroughly nice, but reserved and uncomfortable with the press. I couldn’t imagine him indulging in trash talk.

In boxing, in this sound-bite, social media world, closed mouths don’t get fed.

What he can do is fight.

And in the lower divisions where there is less strength in depth, Singh can be let off the leash sooner rather than later.

He was much too much for Bradford’s Pollard (8st 13lbs). Callum drilled heavy shots to the body from the first bell and landed a particularly withering right hand downstairs in the second.

Pollard was caught by a long right in the third and was then harpooned by a particularly hurtful right to the ribs.

Jake attempted to throw back in the last, but simply lacked the speed and savvy to even ruffle Singh.

Callum Singh has yet to drop a round as a pro – to date, he’s shared one session. He has yet to go beyond six rounds.

The time to up the stakes and discover if he sinks or swims is fast approaching.
