Zach Evans wants a crack at Celtic title
UNBEATEN Cannock light-middle Zach Evans is gunning for a Celtic title.
He underlined his claim on Scott Murray’s superb St Andrew’s Night show last Thursday by outpointing squat, muscular Serge Ambomo.
At the Excelsior Club, in Zach’s hometown, the 27-year-old kept it long and planted rights to the Cameroon fighter’s body.
You can’t be gung-ho with Ambomo, a veteran of over 80 fights. The boxer, who represented his country in the 2012 Olympics is powerful and still capable of pulling off upsets.
I felt referee Ryan Churchill’s 58-56 scorecard after six rounds a little harsh on Evans, now unbeaten in eight.
Ambomo (11st 6lbs) finished the contest like a steam-train, but threw precious little in the proceeding rounds. It’s a pity he didn’t show the same ambition early on.
That late flurry couldn’t be described as a scare for Evans (11st 2lbs) – it wasn’t that dramatic. But the local lad was forced to cover-up on the ropes as Ambomo hurled clubbing blows to head and body with both hands. Some got through.
“I knew he was going to come out and swing in the last round,” Evans said.
He added: “I want a Celtic title fight in 2025. I qualify on both sides of the family. My mum’s side is Scottish, my dad’s side is Welsh. I’d like to win it as a tribute to my grandad who was from Glasgow.”
Evans boxed tidily in the first and speared Ambomo with long rights to the body. He jabbed smartly in the second and continued to work the midriff before upping the gears in the following session.
Ambomo began to throw back in the fifth and really pulled out the stops in the final minute of the contest. Up until then, the bout hadn’t really caught fire.
