Conah closing in on another mega fight
RUMOURS swirl over a November mega fight for Wolverhampton welterweight warrior Conah Walker.
If correct – and nothing has been officially announced, the opportunity is mightily deserved following The Wolf’s pulsating battle with unbeaten Belfast banger Lewis Crocker.
Many at ringside for that breath-taking 10 rounder – this writer included - felt Walker unlucky to lose on points. He threw more punches and bossed the action.
Walker, however, has not sat and sulked in the three months since the Resorts World clash. The 29-year-old has rolled up his sleeves and knuckled down.
“Me being upset isn’t going to resolve anything,” said the Richie Ghent trained contender. “I’m moving on.
“It’s been a bit of a win and lose situation because people who watched it know the scoring didn’t match up to the fight. Look, I’m not going to be the one who throws his toys out of the pram. The judges preferred his boxing to mine and that’s the bottom line.”
What is beyond doubt is the fact Walker, originally trained by Ricky Hatton before switching to BCB, has firmly established himself on the big stage.
He exploded on the national scene by trouncing Geordie KO artist Cyrus Pattinson, a fighter being groomed for big things. He then over-powered unbeaten Lloyd Germaine and proved his pedigree with the Crocker performance.
He is a throwback fighter who refreshingly wants to face those ranked above him, regardless of reputations.
In the ring, Walker’s a snarling pitbull, never taking a backwards step, always hurling hooks.
After 17 fights (three losses), Walker, who learned his trade on the Black Country small hall circuit, believes he can conquer the world.
“It’s about getting back to winning ways,” he said. “I’m constantly in the gym, learning and improving. I don’t take a backwards step, boxing is my life. I’m always trying to push to become a better Conah Walker.
“I think Crocker is ranked in the top 12 of all the governing bodies. I believe I should be higher than him because, in my mind, I beat him. One hundred per cent, I’d love a rematch.
“I should be knocking on the door to world level fights, big, massive fights.”
If the gossip is correct, those knocks have been answered.
