Jaykae: Spider is set to be this city’s first pay-per-view star!

RAPPER Jaykae last night pledged Ibraheem Sulaimaan – the cobra quick lightweight he backs – would be Birmingham’s first pay-per-view fight star.

Sulaimaan added gravity to those words with a ruthless, clinical destruction of Jesus Gonzalez on Matchroom’s major Resorts World Arena show last night.

The man they call “Spider” glided, slipped and shimmied with hands by his side before despatching his opponent with a sickening left hook to the body. That’s the 23-year-old’s fourth win on the spin and tougher opposition now await him.

After the final punch landed, Gonzalez took a step back as the pain spread through his body. He then dropped and was rightly rescued by referee Kevin Parker at one minute 50 seconds of the second.

In that brief period, the Colombian, who had won four of six going into the contest, had been well and truly chewed up and spat out.

He had no answer to Sulaimaan’s unorthodox moves and I didn’t see him land a mildly significant punch.

Sulaimaan, a former national champ with a big following, looks something special. He is also not lacking in self-confidence.

“I will take on the whole world,” he announced during the post-fight interview. “I think I wasted a lot of time in there. See what happens when I take my time and execute my opportunities.

“I know what I’m about. If they want me to fight like Tyson, I’ll fight like Tyson. If they want me to dance like Ali, I’ll dance like Ali.”

He did both against outgunned Gonzalez (9st 9lbs 4oz).

Switching from orthodox to southpaw and swaying with hands by his side, Sulaimaan (9st 9lbs 8oz) buried shots to the body in the first before dropping Gonzalez with a left hook to the body.

He was on his feet at four, but seemed condemned to a short, painful evening.

Sulaimaan showboated in the second, at one point standing in a corner arms draped over the top rope.

When he decided to get serious, it was curtains for Gonzalez.

Matchroom boss Eddie Hearn said of the prospect: “I like him, he’s very exciting. The quality of work is very good, the shot selection impressive. It’s time to start moving him on.”
