Uddin puts on a Naz style show for fans

HAVING shown raw power in his debut, Walsall’s white-hot prospect Hamza Uddin used Madrid’s brave Giulio Commerso to showcase his full repertoire last night.

The former outstanding amateur slipped, weaved, showboated and landed pretty much every punch in the book on his way to landslide 60-50 victory on referee Kevin Parker’s card.

On Matchroom’s Resorts World show, Commerso took everything thrown at him – sometimes with a smile on his face.

Uddin, aged 20, entered the paid ranks with a “banger’s” reputation, but he couldn’t budge Commerso. The Spaniard, who lost for the second time in six outings, has spirit, although he is a naturally bigger man than the Black Country flyweight.

Hamza, in his second pro contest, would stalk from a near crouch before sliding jabs upward. Hands low, he deftly rolled under Commerso’s punches before applying punishment.

His style is unconventional. He swayed, bent low then hurled punches from his boots. The young man is certainly born to entertain, in the Prince Naseem mode.

He also possesses the world featherweight champ’s self belief.

The visitor was wobbled by a left in the second and my notes state simply: “Target practice for Uddin.”

That it was and the prospect drilled home hooks to the body in the third.

Commerso had a point deducted in the fourth for holding after being caught flush by a “right, lead uppercut, right” combination. With the punishment increasing, the infringement was understandable.

He was rocked by a right in the fifth and Uddin, realising his opponent was there for the long haul, put on a display of theatricals in the last, shimmying, strutting and winding up his punches.
